Happy Mental Health Month!  Did you know that 44 million Americans experience some type of mental disorder each year? In honor of National Mental Health Month, the Krist Samaritan Center is giving you some important information to pass on to others. We want everyone to understand and be aware that mental health is an important issue, and there are people and organizations like the Krist Samaritan who are ready and willing to help. More in Mind: Interesting Stats on Mental Health | National Mental Health Month was created to promote awareness about mental health disorders, such as depression, anxiety, OCD and post-traumatic stress disorder. These disorders affect millions of people every year. As a matter of fact, an estimated 121 million people worldwide currently suffer from depression alone.  Below you’ll find some astounding statistics on mental illness. We hope this information can open your eyes to the state of mental health in America, and encourage you to inform and help those who may be suffering from a mental illness.  •	91% of Americans are likely to consult or recommend that a family member consult with a mental health professional. (APA Survey, 2004)  •	Nearly 50% of American households have had someone see a mental health professional. (APA Survey, 2004)  •	An estimated 10-20% of children worldwide have one or more mental health or behavioral problems. (World Health Organization)  •	Nearly 14 million American adults is an alcohol abuser or alcoholic at any given time. (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism)  •	Approximately 1 out of 75 people may experience panic disorder. Only 1 out of 4 people with panic disorder receive treatment. (National Institutes of Mental Health)   •	Bipolar disorder affects approximately 2.3 million American adults annually. (National Institutes of Mental Health)  •	Depression is among the leading causes of disability worldwide. However, fewer than 25% of those with depression worldwide have access to effective treatments. (World Health Organization)   •	Approximately 3.3 million American adults have obsessive-compulsive disorder. (National Institutes of Mental Health)  •	Untreated mental health disorders cost American businesses $79 billion in lost productivity per year. (Surgeon General’s Report on Mental Health)

West Houston – First Methodist Houston First Methodist Houston is a diverse, community of faith with a history that dates back to 1839. The Center is proud to offer its services to the church’s second location in the Westchase area (the first is located Downtown). Located at 3663 Westcenter Drive in Houston, Texas, the Center’s West Houston counseling location is staffed on Mondays from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. by Reverend Jerry DeSobe, Ph.D., L.P.C, and on Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. by Samiha Boutros, M.A., L.P.C.

Krist Samaritan Center Reaches Out with Clergy and Congregational Care  | The Krist Samaritan Center is kicking off a new program to address the emotional and mental health needs of clergy and their congregations with the Clergy and Congregational Care program (CCC). Spearheaded by the national Samaritan Institute in Denver through a grant by the Lily Foundation, the program focuses on the needs of clergy and their congregations by fostering relationships among pastors.   The CCC team is comprised of two Krist Samaritan Center staff members, Mariana Targhetta, M.A., L.P.C., L.M.F.T., and Derek Prins M.A., L.P.C., as well as local clergy from University Baptist Church in Clear Lake, Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Friendswood, St. Luke's United Methodist Church, and Christ Church United Methodist of The Woodlands.   |  Mark Your Calendars!
