SPIRIT Carole & Ronald Krist Samaritan Center for Counseling & Education November 2009 · Touching Lives · Healing Hearts
A Thankful Heart. At the Krist Samaritan Center, we have so much to be thankful for this year—devoted staff, wonderful clients, an amazing board of directors and a generous group of supporters. Above all, we are extremely grateful to work in a ministry that touches lives and heals hearts simultaneously. It has been said, “a grateful heart is a happy heart,” so as we get close to November 26th, we invite you to count your blessings with us and have a Happy Thanksgiving. It’s time to sit back, relax and catch this month’s Spirit. Moved to Action. If life were a sentence, then thankfulness should be its verb. It’s important to foster thankful hearts in adults and children as the life-perspective gained by living gratefully is invaluable. In fact, when individuals live truly thankful lives, they are often moved to action—to care for others, perform intentional acts of kindness and maintain a positive attitude. As the holiday season approaches, there are a few ways for families to consciously recognize their blessings and cultivate thankful hearts. •	Visit a local nursing home or serve elderly neighbors who need help •	Encourage thankfulness in prayer •	Share what each person is grateful for at the dinner table •	Promote hands-on community service at a local rescue mission or food pantry As important as it is for families to serve together, it’s also great (and fun) for children and teens to serve with their peers. Why not invite a couple of family friends to go and serve along with you? Service Spotlight Each month, Spirit will shine a spotlight on one of our services to reveal how Krist Samaritan Center is touching lives and healing hearts all across Houston. “Purposely Chosen” Adoption Program. The Krist Samaritan Center hosts a “Purposely Chosen” course to educate individuals on the unique situations and circumstances faced by adoption-touched families. The 4-hour course is led by Derek Prins, M.A., L.P.C. and addresses such issues as loss, grief, attachment, forming a family, and practical parenting skills. The program is offered at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church on the last Thursday of every month from 6 to 10 p.m. For more information, or to register: Call 281.480.7554 ext. 0 and speak with the receptionist. There shall be eternal summer in the grateful heart. ~Celia Thaxter
