“No matter how long the winter, SPRING is sure to follow!” It’s official. Spring is here. It’s time to do away with winter worries and bask in the sunshine of the season. To help shed those worries, the Krist Samaritan Center wants to you to stop and smell the roses and enjoy this month’s Spirit.    Summer blues. It’s not so hot. Do the summer blues have you down? Does the thought of backyard barbeques, family vacations and going to a ball game make you cringe? Often those suffering from depression withdrawal from social activities they used to enjoy. It’s important to understand the gravity of this crippling disorder. The reality is, if left untreated, depression can cause life-threatening problems.    When you feel yourself slipping into sadness, look for possible triggers that cause your feelings of unhappiness, so that you can better adapt in the future. Here are a few ways to help manage feelings of depression, anxiety or stress: 1.	Take care of YOU It’s important to remember that you are responsible for your own happiness. Do a solo-activity everyday that brings you joy.  2.	Think positive thoughts Negative thought breeds negative action. If you train your brain to think happy thoughts, you’re more likely to be productive. 3.	Address what’s causing you stress The first step to healing is addressing the situation by talking to someone. Too often we bottle up our emotions. 4.	Do something fun Dance, sing, see a funny movie—do whatever you can to get your mind off your sadness. Don’t dwell on pessimistic thought.  5.	Don’t allow negative people in your life It’s contagious. Don’t let anyone “rain on your parade”—or else, you’ll start doing the same to others. Service Spotlight  Each month, Spirit will shine a spotlight on one of our services to reveal how Krist Samaritan Center is touching lives and healing hearts all across Houston.  MindWorks Testing MindWorks Testing, a program of the Krist Samaritan Center, offers comprehensive psychological assessments for both children and adults. Part of MindWorks’ mission is to educate the public on new developments and ways to cope with various issues.   Recently, Dr. Jerry DeSobe of the Krist Samaritan Center spoke on Houston radio station KSBJ about learning disabilities. Based on the number of inquiring phone calls to the Center after the interview, Dr. DeSobe’s discussion was said to be informative, helpful and successful. “Healing Hearts After Hurricane Ike” Counseling Program  The Krist Samaritan Center offers counseling geared toward victims of Hurricane Ike.
