New Year’s Resolutions – Are You On Track?

While we enter 2011 with positivity and a seemingly undeterred commitment to change, unfortunately, research shows that most New Year’s resolutions will not be kept. In fact, in a recent online study1, only 12% of all participants achieved their once-so-strong goals. Why? Interestingly enough, it’s what our goals are lacking that makes us part of the 88% who don’t achieve their goals.

From lofty and unfeasible to hard-to-define and unclear, all too often, our goals are never attained because they lack “S.M.A.R.T.”2 characteristics. Many of us have heard the acronym, but a New Year’s “refreshment” can’t hurt. For a goal to be S.M.A.R.T., it must be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely.

Whether you want to spend more time with family and friends, help others or learn something new, set S.M.A.R.T. New Year’s resolutions. Don’t be surprised if you become part of the 12% of goal-setters who achieve favorable results.

Here are a few action items to keep your resolutions on track.
Make S.M.A.R.T. resolutions.
Create a plan of doable steps and review it frequently.
Write down why you want to achieve the goal.
Repeat power statements to yourself on a daily basis.
Visualize, visualize, visualize.
Have an accountability partner.
Celebrate successes!
