When Tragedy Strikes

As demonstrated in the movie theater shootings in Aurora, Colorado this month, it is easy to see the effects of untreated mental illness when tragedy strikes. What we don't realize is how untreated mental illness significantly affects our community on a daily basis.

In the greater Houston area, it is estimated that nearly 700,000 people suffer from a mental illness*. Without treatment, mental problems negatively impact academic and work performance, relational functioning and all other aspects of life. Mental illness harms the individual, family and community through decreased workplace performance, unemployment, juvenile and criminal justice system involvement, imprisonment and homelessness. All are costly drains on limited resources.

If you or someone in your family suffers from a mental illness, call Krist Samaritan Center at 281.480.7554 and schedule a consultation today.

According to the Mental Health Policy Analysis Collaborative, Houston loses more than $5.6 billion annually in productivity and annual earnings as a result of mental illness.
One in five Americans suffers from a mental illness, per the 2012 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Less than half receive any treatment. At the Center, one out of every four clients is treated for a serious mental illness.
